Drinking sugary drinks including fruit juice increases risk of cancer

Drinking sugary drinks including fruit juice could increase your risk of getting cancer, research indicates.

The effect of the sugar on vital organs and the associated increase in blood sugar levels are believed to be among the possible reasons.

Additives in some soft drinks could also play a role.

The French Institute of Health Research quizzed 101,257 healthy adults with an average age of 42 about their diets.

Drinking just 100ml more sugary juice than the average a day was linked to a 22% increased risk of breast cancer

 

They then assessed the associations between consumption of sugared drinks, 100% fruit juices and diet drinks and risk of overall cancer, as well as breast, prostate, and bowel cancers.

Drinking just 100ml more sugary juice than the average a day was linked to an 18% increased risk of overall cancer and a 22% increased risk of breast cancer.

Study Author Dr Bernard Srour said: “Limiting sugary drink consumption might contribute to a reduction in cancer cases.”
