Kyrgios: ‘There is more to life than being a professional athlete’

By | February 6, 2021

He might be Australia’s rising star on the world tennis stage but when he’s off the court, Nick Kyrgios is a fan of spending his time mastering games of the digital variety.

“I’m a pretty big gamer and when I’m on the road I like to relax by playing in my hotel room to all hours of the night,” the 25-year-old says.

“I love it but I probably need to value my sleep a bit more, especially before a big game.”

Kyrgios is well aware that gaming isn’t exactly giving him the same kind of cardio workout as the game he’s become world famous for — and for the Australian Open tournament he’s about to set out to conquer — but says it’s a good way for him to wind down and forget the stresses of the world stage.

“I know it’s not the healthiest activity but I find it a great way to tune out and have a laugh with friends,” he tells Health Hacker.

Besides catching up on more sleep, Kyrgios is hoping life returns to a more familiar pattern in 2021.

With the world of tennis still in disarray, and global tournaments still up in the air, the tennis ace is holding for a return to some sort of normality.

“Hopefully life will get back to normal,” he says.

“Last year was a difficult year in a lot of ways for so many people but I learned a lot about myself and really gained an appreciation for what is important, which was really valuable.”

And when it comes to exactly what is important for the Canberra born-and-bred tennis ace, he says he’s discovered that there’s no place like home.

“I realised how important family and friends are to your health,” he says.

“I know it sounds like I’m stating the obvious, but I have been on the road for such a long time from a very young age. This year really made me appreciate how important my family and friends are and how much I love being home in Canberra.”

Diet

“Home cooking is my preferred diet. My mother always has the freshest food and some of

the best vegan dishes I’ve had. I love coconut water, fresh pesto pasta, and chilli oil is a must.”

Exercise

“I love playing basketball. Whenever I get a spare minute I’ll grab a ball and shoot around.”

Life advice

“I just try to surround myself with good people, show humility and realise there is more to life than being a professional athlete.”

Mindfulness

“I have two dogs at home – Quincy and King. They always put a smile on my face and make me realise how important the simple things in life are.”
